Brancusi: Art is just beginning
Constantin Brancusi exhibition shows the finest of his sculptures ...
The Centre Pompidou in Paris is hosting a grand exhibition, called “Brancusi, Art is just beginning” – of almost 400 of Constantin Brancusi’s works from 27 March to 1 July 2024. It includes over 120 sculptures, as well as photographs, drawings, films, newspaper articles, and reviews – even the famous 1916 “Princess X” which created controversy and scandal in 1920. The exhibition is the first since 1995.
Romanian-born artist Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) arrived in Paris in 1904 at the age of 28, where he remained until his death at 81. He left his entire collection and studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris to the French state on the condition that his studio would be rebuilt exactly as it was on the day of his death. His studio, temporarily closed for the exhibition, is reconstructed in the large hall of the Centre Pompidou.
His approach is minimalistic with simple curved lines with smoothness and light – in wood, stone, and metal. This can be seen in his works: “The Kiss” (1907), “The Prayer” (1908), “The Sleeping Muse” (1910), “Bird in Space” (1924), “Leda” (1926), “Portrait of James Joyce for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun” (1929), the flight of the birds, a series of animal pieces, and many more.
