For three weeks in June 2026, French artist JR transforms Paris’s oldest bridge into La Caverne du Pont-Neuf (The Cave of the Pont Neuf), a monumental installation that pays tribute to the legendary 1985 work The Pont Neuf Wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Forty years ago, Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the bridge in golden sandstone-coloured fabric. JR’s response and tribute is not a recreation.

Rather than wrapping the bridge, he has turned it into an immense cave-like formation inspired by the limestone quarries that provided the stone used to build the Pont Neuf and much of Paris itself.

The installation stretches approximately 120 metres in length, rises up to 18 metres high, and creates the illusion of a rocky landscape emerging from the heart of the river Seine in Paris.

Standing before it this morning, it looked primal and of nature: a mountain instead of a bridge. Paris is a city of elegant lines, symmetry and façades. Yet here was something primal. Something geological. Beneath every polished boulevard lies raw limestone.

The work is called La Caverne for a reason. A cave depicts shelter and transformation. JR has said that the project references both the ancient quarries beneath Paris and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the philosophical story about perception and reality.

In 1985, Christo wrapped the bridge. In 2026, JR turns it into a mountain.

Christo wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric, concealing its surface to reveal its form. JR does the opposite. He magnifies the bridge’s hidden geological origins, revealing the stone beneath the city.

Christo asked viewers to forget what the bridge is. JR asks viewers to remember where it came from. That artistic dialogue across forty years is what makes this project far more than a simple homage.

Walking near the installation, I thought less about architecture and more about memory. Christo and Jeanne-Claude changed the way people thought about public art. Their works were temporary by design. They appeared, looming large, and then vanished. No museum could contain them. No collector could own them. What remained was the memory of having been there to witness one of their installations. The previous one was the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in September 2021.

That philosophy lives on in JR’s tribute. The work will open day and day from 6-28 June 2026, then disappear, and will remain just another monumental memory.

This Renoir painting is a masterclass in colour. In the painting, three people are at a Parisian café table, two sitting, with the focal person an elegantly dressed woman wearing a light blue-green dress and a pale hat adorned with violets. She is not looking at the bearded man who is concentrating on lighting a cigarette, or the woman standing next to her, nor is she looking at the viewer, the artist.

The pale blue-green dress is almost translucent. The young woman’s face glows with a softness that feels lit from within. Behind her, the woman in black provides the perfect counterpoint. Her dark clothing and dramatic hat frame the lighter figure, like the darkness of night that makes a star shine brighter.

The violets are one of the most intriguing details in this painting because Renoir rarely included flowers purely as decoration. In Victorian floriography, highly fashionable in Renoir’s era, violets were associated with secret love, faithfulness, devotion, remembrance, and tender affection. What fascinates me is that the violets appear twice: once on her hat and again near her collar.

On a simpler level, violets were fashionable spring flowers in Paris during the late 19th century due to their delicate fragrance. Standing before the painting, I see the violets as the emotional core of affection, perhaps even love. The violets may be a small gesture, but they carry much tenderness. And that, I think, is very Renoir. The Renoir and Love – Renoir et l’amour – exhibition continues at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris until 19 July 2026 to pay tribute to the popular French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).

But it is not the violets that capture my fascination. I am attracted to the seduction of small gestures. I am attracted to the man lighting a cigarette. His presence fascinates me. He is not posing. He is not performing. He is not even looking at the women.

Instead, he bends forward, head tilted down, hands occupied with the small ritual of lighting a cigarette. This is where the painting becomes unexpectedly sensual. I often find people most attractive when they are absorbed in something so intently that their concentration becomes alluring. In this painting, it is a man sheltering a match flame. It is a fleeting moment of concentration, and Renoir understood how compelling such moments can be.

I found myself wondering about this as I stood in front of the painting. I dislike cigarette smoke and would not choose to sit in a smoke-filled room. Yet I have always understood why cinema, photography, and painting have so often treated the act of lighting a cigarette as alluring. It is not about smoking; it is about the ritual. Lighting a cigarette creates a miniature drama. The striking of the match. The brief flare of light. The cupped hands protecting the flame. The inhalation of breath to sustain the flame. The pause. The anticipation. Lighting a cigarette compresses an entire sequence of focused actions into a few seconds.

The attraction is what the gesture communicates: confidence, contemplation, independence, rebellion, mystery, sophistication, or simply presence. In Renoir’s painting, the cigarette functions almost like a prop in a theatre production. It gives the man something to do and creates a moment of absorbed concentration that draws my attention.

Renoir understood that life often reveals its beauty not in grand declarations but in small gestures: the touch of a hand, the arrangement of flowers, the tilt of a hat, the lighting of a cigarette.

Many paintings impress, but few paintings linger. The women in this painting are beautiful, but not idealized. The man is ordinary, yet compelling. Nothing dramatic occurs, yet I cannot stop looking at it. This painting lingers because Renoir persuades me that an ordinary Parisian afternoon is worthy of eternity. Perhaps that is Renoir’s true genius. A table, the softness of spring hues, two handfuls of violets, and gazes that don’t connect but create mystery, drama, and intrigue. In the corner of my eye, there is a match flame, a man in concentration, and suddenly, a moment that would otherwise have vanished becomes unforgettable.

The French are among the great oyster lovers of the world. France24 reports that France consumes an estimated 130,000 tonnes of oysters each year, with about 70% consumed during the end of year and New Year celebrations: the oyster season. France also produces about 83% of all oysters in the European Union and are one of the world’s highest producers.

Globally, China dominates the production with about 85% of the world’s oyster aquaculture, but France is at the top for its oyster culture and are, per-capita, the greatest oyster enthusiasts in the West.

France’s oyster obsession is in its history and heritage. French kings, philosophers, aristocrats, and writers were famous oyster devotees. King Henri IV supposedly consumed hundreds in a sitting and Louis XIV had them delivered daily to the Palace of Versailles.

December in France is oyster season in coastal towns from Brittany to Arcachon. With oysters comes thousands upon thousands of tonnes of oyster shells annually. Oyster shells may look harmless, but they create a genuine waste-management challenge as they are hauled away to landfill or industrial disposal sites. Shells are bulky, heavy, salty, slow to decompose, and expensive to transport. Large shell accumulations can create odor and sanitation problems.

Now, in one of the most wonderfully French forms of environmental reinvention imaginable, a startup is transforming oyster shells into elegant porcelain, tiles, and paving stones. In France, like much of Europe, industries are being forced to rethink waste streams, resource extraction, and carbon-heavy production methods.

Oyster shells are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, which is the same mineral found in limestone that is traditionally used in ceramics and porcelain production. The startup Alegina realized that the shell itself could become a resource. The process begins with collection.

Restaurants, oyster farms, seafood markets, and food-processing facilities put discarded shells into oyster waste bins instead of throwing them into general waste bins. The shells are transported to recycling facilities where they are washed to remove salt, organic residue, and marine impurities. Then comes transformation.

The shells are crushed into fine powder or granules using industrial grinders. Depending on the final product, the material is blended with clay, minerals, binders, or cement-like compounds.

For porcelain production, the oyster shell powder becomes part of a refined ceramic mixture that can be moulded, fired, polished, and glazed into plates, cups, decorative tiles, and interior design elements. The result is surprisingly beautiful: pale, luminous, smooth, and slightly textured, often carrying a faint pearlescent quality. Other companies are using oyster shell composites to make paving stones, architectural materials, and eco-construction products.

Traditional ceramics and construction materials often rely on intensive quarrying and high-energy industrial processes. Re-using oyster shell calcium carbonate, especially in coastal regions, can dramatically reduce the environmental burden associated with seafood waste management. Unlike many “green” innovations that remain abstract or invisible, this one is tangible. You can hold oyster shell porcelain in your hand, drink coffee from it, or walk across it.

Designers and artisans are drawn to the uniqueness of the material itself. No two oyster shell ceramic pieces are identical. Consumers increasingly love the story behind the object. A porcelain plate made partly from French oyster shells evokes a sense of place, like Atlantic tides and seafood stalls.

The oyster shell, once thrown aside after a feast, returns transformed. A fragment of coastline reborn. Throwaway oyster trash becomes permanent ornamental tableware. The sea is returning to the dining room.

Across France, from fashionable Parisian hair salons to rural barbershops in Normandy and Lyon, cut hair that would once have been swept into bins and discarded is being transformed into a biodegradable defense system for young trees. The initiative comes from the French company, Capillum, to deter deer from eating tree saplings by using the scent of human beings – specifically, human hair. Deer do not like the smell of humanity and walk away from young trees that smell like humans.

According to recent reporting on France24, France produces nearly 4,000 tonnes of discarded hair every year, most of which is landfilled or incinerated. Capillum saw a remarkably under-used natural material going to waste and decided to re-use it.

Human hair is extraordinarily durable. It decomposes slowly, contains nitrogen-rich keratin, absorbs hydrocarbons, retains moisture, and carries a persistent human scent. Those properties make it surprisingly valuable in agriculture, environmental cleanup (such as for oil spills), and forestry.

Foresters across France have long struggled with overgrazing by deer populations and continue to reforest their land. Young saplings, especially newly planted oak, fir, chestnut, and beech trees are vulnerable to browsing. Browsing is when deer strip bark from trees, chew tender shoots, and damage fragile trunks.

Traditionally, foresters rely on plastic tubes, fencing, chemical repellents, or repeated human intervention to protect young trees. These methods are expensive, labor-intensive, visually intrusive, and environmentally problematic.

Capillum’s approach is startlingly simple. The company collects human hair, cut from hair salons throughout France and neighboring European countries. Participating salons sweep hair clippings – from the young, the old, the dyed, the natural, from men and women – into designated recycling containers rather than ordinary waste bins. The hair is then transported to processing facilities where it is cleaned, sterilized, sorted, and compressed into thick biodegradable mats and protective felt-like materials.

Placed on the ground around the base of young trees or tied in strips on tree trunks, these mats create a subtle but effective deterrent. Deer smell humans and instinctively avoid the area.

The mats are only made of hair and wool: no chemicals, no plastic, and no harm to the animals. Just scent.

There is something deeply French about the transformation itself: haute coiffure becoming ecological infrastructure, Parisian people perfume becoming deer repellent.

A lock of hair cut in a chic Paris arrondissement may ultimately end up protecting a pine sapling in the forests of the Ardennes or the Vosges. The processed mats are laid around the base of trees or integrated into forestry planting systems. Over time, they slowly biodegrade into the soil. As they break down, they release nutrients, including nitrogen and amino acids that may support surrounding plant growth.

This is not a novelty. Capillum is not merely recycling. The company is participating in what France increasingly calls l’économie circulaire – the circular economy – in which waste is reimagined as a resource. Hair becomes biomaterial. Beauty waste becomes ecological protection.

French foresters involved in pilot projects report promising results, particularly in areas with dense deer populations. The hair mats appear to prevent deer from browsing on vulnerable saplings without requiring extensive fencing systems. For many forestry workers, the appeal lies not only in effectiveness but in practicality.

Plastic tree guards eventually become another waste problem. They crack, blow away, or require removal years later. Hair mats simply disappear naturally into the environment.

Farmers and gardeners are also experimenting with similar approaches around vegetable plots and orchards, using hair barriers to discourage rabbits, deer, and wild boar. Rural France has long relied on folk methods involving scent deterrence, so Capillum’s innovation modernizes and scales up an old tradition.

France has a particular talent for turning environmental necessity into cultural imagination. This is a country where urban composting bins appear beside medieval churches, where abandoned rail lines become wildflower corridors, and where ecological conversations often intertwine with aesthetics, agriculture, gastronomy, and philosophy. The idea that something as intimate and personal as human hair that could return to the land to protect forests, nourish soil, and reduce waste, feels oddly poetic.

A haircut becomes forest protection. Somewhere in a French woodland, a young tree survives another season because a deer caught the faint scent of humanity in the soil and chose not to eat the young tree, but to walk away instead.

“Solitude, in and of itself, is not loneliness.” “Technology, in and of itself, is neutral.” What exactly does the phrase “in and of itself” mean? Is it elegantly intellectual or is it now becoming slightly passé … a fading phrase of yesteryear?

In a previous post on Substack, I used the sentence: “A teacup without a saucer is, in and of itself, entirely ordinary.” A reader asked what I meant.

At its simplest, the phrase means: considered alone, by its essential nature, without outsidecontext. By isolating something from its surrounding associations, it can be judged on its own intrinsic qualities. For example: “Rain, in and of itself, is neither depressing nor romantic.” Meaning: our interpretation of the rain creates the mood, not the rain itself.

The phrase is essentially philosophical shorthand for: “What is this thing when stripped of external influence?”

The expression evolved from older forms of philosophical and legal English, where precision mattered enormously. Variations of “in itself” and “of itself” appear in theological and philosophical writing stretching back centuries.

Philosophers love the concept of essence: what something is versus what people think about it, or what it becomes in practice.

Writers love the concept of nuance. Compare “power is corrupting” with “power, in and of itself, is not corrupting.” The second phrase opens intellectual space. The phrase is often used when a writer wants to avoid oversimplification, sound analytical, introduce moral subtlety, ordistinguish essence from consequence.

But, is the phrase becoming passé? Perhaps slightly. “In and of itself” belongs to an older, more reflective cadence of English. Some editors now trim it aggressively because it can sound overly academic, self-important, or unnecessarily wordy. Modern writing increasingly uses brevity, directness, and a conversational tone. Today, many writers simply say: “on its own” - “by itself” - “in itself” - “intrinsically” or “at its core.”

Instead of “the painting is beautiful in and of itself,” the contemporary style is “the painting stands on its own” or “the painting is beautiful by itself.” Cleaner. Faster. Less ceremonial. For me, boring, no flair, no punch.

Old-fashioned perhaps, but the phrase is expressive in a way modern efficiency sometimes loses. What I like most about “in and of itself” is that the phrase embodies what it describes. Taken in and of itself, it is merely a string of ordinary words, but culturally, emotionally, and historically, it carries much more precision and literary cadence.

And honestly, for me, the phrase can sound rather beautiful when used well.

I recently saw a photograph of a teacup resting on a book. That made me look, but it was the teacup without a saucer that bothered me immediately.

Then I realised why. The missing saucer created a tiny rupture in the image. For me, it was a subtle breach of expectation. I suspect I reacted almost instinctively because I’m British.

Historically, saucers emerged alongside the popularity of drinking tea and coffee in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Imported porcelain from China inspired entire rituals of serving and etiquette. Originally, saucers had practical purposes: catching drips, protecting furniture, cooling hot liquids, and stabilizing delicate cups.

In earlier centuries, some people even poured tea onto the saucer to cool it before drinking. It’s a habit now considered outdated, but once perfectly ordinary. Over time, the saucer, in Britain, became more than functional. The British relationship with tea is about order, sense, and sensibility. Traditional table settings at tea-time often valued completion. The saucer may no longer be practically necessary in many situations, but culturally it still signals, for me at least, a time to relax, sigh, and think that the whole world is now right.

A teacup without a saucer can feel oddly unfinished, almost socially exposed, as though someone arrived at dinner wearing only one shoe and insisting nothing was wrong. Without it, the teacup becomes abruptly utilitarian. Still functional, but slightly emotionally homeless.

The absent saucer interrupted my visual grammar. My eye unconsciously expects balance: cup + saucer, pen + paper, vase + flowers. When one element is missing, the composition just doesn’t sit right with me. Because a saucer is associated with hospitality and completeness, itsabsence can register aesthetically, and also emotionally.

There is also something psychologically interesting, to me, about saucers. A saucer creates a boundary between heat and surface, fragility and stability, movement and rest. The saucer “contains” the teacup socially and visually. Without a saucer, the teacup feels precarious. It feels temporary, less anchored,and totally ungrounded.

For me, a saucer also evokes memory as much as etiquette: tea with my mother, afternoon teaand cake, floral china cabinets, conversations at kitchen tables, and careful domestic rituals. A teacup alone can therefore feel strangely solitary. And perhaps that is the deeper reason the image unsettled me: the missing saucer created a subtle sense of absence.

A teacup without a saucer is, in and of itself, entirely ordinary. Though, I become discombobulated. Sometimes discomfort comes not from what is present, but from what is missing. A saucer is a small thing. But small things often hold an entire mountain of feelings. And that’s no small thing.

In Paris, I regularly pass the Pasteur Institute, the university in memory of one of the great minds of the nineteenth century: Louis Pasteur. He was a French scientist, chemist, and microbiologist synonymous with several discoveries: vaccination, fermentation, and pasteurization.

It is easy to think of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) only in terms of diseases, laboratories, microscopes, sterilized glassware, vaccines for rabies and anthrax, the saviour of silkworms across France, and the pasteurization of dairy and food processing. His deeper legacy may actually be about serendipity, observation, and attention.

A quote often attributed to Pasteur is: “Chance favours the prepared mind.” Sometimes the quote is expanded into the idea that serendipity is not mere luck, but a skill requiring a well-prepared mind.

This is important in the meaning of discovery. Pasteur was not saying that luck is unimportant. He was saying that many people encounter the same accidents, coincidences, fragments, interruptions, and strange moments, but only some people recognize their significance.

He was saying that a prepared mind notices these things and takes action. For example, a distracted person overhears a sentence in a café and forgets it. A writer hears the same sentence and builds an entire novel around it.

Perhaps this is why creative work and scientific work are not so different after all. Both require curiosity, observation, patience, understanding uncertainty, and the ability to seek meaning.

Pasteur spent years studying fermentation and invisible organisms at a time when many people doubted whether germs even existed. He learned to trust patterns before the scientific community could see them. Writers do something similar. Writers often sense emotional truths before people can fully explain them.

A prepared mind is not necessarily an academic mind or a genius mind. It is a receptive mind. For writers especially, I think “preparation” means reading widely, observing people, noticing emotional details, staying intellectually curious, fermenting ideas in the mind over time, and learning to recognize when an apparently insignificant moment contains a hidden opportunity for exploration.

Sometimes the material for an essay arrives years before the essay itself, or a novel begins with a single image glimpsed from a bus window, or healing begins with one sentence heard at exactly the right time.

Serendipity is not passive. It is active, demonstrating observance of the world. Passing the Pasteur Institute, I sometimes wonder how many discoveries begin with people who see what others miss, with people noticing what others overlook, and not with genius at all.

In many ways it is exactly what Pasteur himself believed about discovery. Louis Pasteur was unquestionably brilliant, but his brilliance was not simply raw intellectual horsepower. His genius included disciplined observation, persistence, pattern recognition, and the willingness to pursue anomalies that others ignored.

His famous quote, “Chance favours the prepared mind,” suggests that discoveries often begin when people become curious enough to investigate a small moment, an anomaly, seeing something different. Pasteur repeatedly did this. For example, while studying fermentation, he noticed microorganisms behaving differently in different conditions; he questioned why wine and milk spoiled; he investigated why some silkworm populations became diseased while others survived; he pursued tiny irregularities that others might have considered contamination or failure.

His genius was partly the ability to recognise significance inside disorder. And equally important: he acted on what he observed.

Observation alone though is not discovery. Many people notice strange things. Pasteur tested, experimented, followed threads, revised ideas, and persisted through skepticism. He combined imagination with method. That combination is important for writers too.

That combination is actually encouraging, because it makes creativity and discovery feel more human and more attainable. It suggests that breakthroughs are not always lightning bolts from nowhere. Sometimes they begin with careful attention to what everybody else walks by.

I unexpectedly encountered Whistler’s Mother while visiting the Musée d’Orsay for the luminous Renoir and Love exhibition in April 2026. After rooms filled with sunlight, conversation, and Impressionist joy, I was on an artistic love-high. I turned a corner of the gallery and there she was: seated in silence, dressed in black, composed against a restrained grey interior.

The effect was immediate. She was almost impossible to walk away from.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) painted “Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1” in 1871. It is known as “The Artist’s Mother” and more simply known as “Whistler’s Mother.”

The subject is Anna McNeill Whistler. She was around 67 years old when the portrait was painted in London, and he was 37.

Whistler was born in America, but spent much of his career in Europe, especially in London and Paris, where he was closely connected to avant-garde artistic circles of the late nineteenth century.

What many people may not realize is that this was not originally intended to be a portrait of his mother at all. According to art history accounts, the model that James Whistler planned to use reportedly did not arrive, and his mother, who was visiting James in London, stepped in instead. Because she found it difficult to stand for long periods, he painted her seated. The result became one of the most recognizable paintings in the world.

Part of its fame comes from its extraordinary simplicity. The painting is austere, almost minimal: black dress, grey wall, still posture, and no obvious symbolism. Yet it radiates emotional gravity.

Audiences saw dignity, restraint, and maternal presence. Whistler preferred harmony, tone, and composition over storytelling. That is why he titled it “Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1” which emphasizes colour and balance rather than motherhood or portraiture. But, over time, the painting became an almost universal symbol of motherhood itself.

What fascinates many visitors is that this quintessentially American image is not housed in the United States, but in Paris. The French state purchased the painting in 1891, making it the first work by an American artist acquired by the French government. That’s remarkable.

Today, the work forms part of the permanent collection of the Musée d’Orsay, where it has become one of the museum’s most visited paintings.

Standing before the painting in person, right in front of it, eyeball to eyeball, what surprised me most was not the famous image itself, but the atmosphere around it. There is something profoundly modern about the minimalism of it. The empty space matters as much as the figure. The geometry matters as much as the emotion. Look at the curtain, the framed print on the wall, and the severe horizontal line of the floor. Everything is controlled, but not cold. There is still emotion there. I almost cried.

There is another layer to the story that makes the work especially moving. Whistler’s relationship with his mother appears to have been deeply influential. Anna McNeill Whistler was religious, disciplined, and emotionally steady. These are qualities almost opposite to the artistic circles that her son inhabited. Whistler did not paint his mother as an idealized Renaissance Madonna, nor as a Victorian madam: not mother, not Madonna, not madam. He painted her with respect.

Ironically, the painting’s fame eventually grew beyond the art world entirely. It has been endlessly reproduced, parodied, referenced in films, advertisements, cartoons, postage stamps, and popular culture. But the original, right before me, remains strangely untouched by all that familiarity.

Seeing it in person restores its seriousness and also its sensuality. The greys become delicate, the hands become soft, and the artist becomes a patient son in a stark room interpreting his view of his mother. He is totally unaware that the image would one day travel across continents and centuries.

After leaving the Musée d’Orsay, I reflected how perfectly Whistler’s Mother complemented the Renoir exhibition I had come to see. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1910) was only seven years younger than Whistler, so they were in art circles at the same time. Where Whistler stripped away colour, movement, sociability, flirtation, eye contact, intensity of action and sunlight, and everything that Renoir brought to the art world, both painters, in completely different ways, understood intimacy.

Renoir found intimacy in cafés, gardens, and human gatherings. The other found it in silence.

There’s a municipal debate across France over streetlights and whether to reduce lighting at night, for environmental reasons, or not.

I feel safer at night under a streetlamp. Light suggests visibility, safety, and protection. Research backs up at least part of my intuition. In some studies, improved lighting has been linked to reductions in crime in certain contexts. There’s also a practical dimension: lighting helps drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians navigate safely and avoid accidents.

Except, it’s not quite that simple.

A growing body of research suggests that more light does not automatically mean less crime. Some reviews find no clear evidence that increased lighting deters crime. Large-scale studies in England and Wales found little or no impact on crime or road accidents when lights were dimmed or turned off. In France, recent analysis found no significant change in most crimes after lighting reductions, with only a slight rise in burglaries in dense urban areas.

In other words: light makes us feel safer, but it may not consistently make us safer.

Meanwhile, the environmental case for darkness is growing louder and harder to ignore. Around 80% of the world’s population lives under light-polluted skies, says a Guardian article in February about a Belgian national park turning off “pointless” streetlights. Wallonia wildlife and park administrators stated that darkness is not the absence of something; it’s an ecosystem in its own right. Artificial light at night is now considered a global ecological disruptor, affecting insects, bird migratory patterns, and animal eating and breeding cycles.

The debate may not really be about crime statistics or energy bills or animal conservation. It’s about perception. People feel less safe in the dark, and when they feel unsafe, they behave differently. They avoid streets, change routines, and withdraw from public spaces. Even if crime doesn’t increase, the experience of the city changes.

So we’re left with a paradox: lighting may not significantly reduce crime, but darkness can still reduce freedom.

France is debating it loudly, but this is not a uniquely French dilemma. Cities worldwide are transitioning to LEDs, sensors, and adaptive lighting systems as part of a broader global shift, rethinking the assumption that brighter is always better.

So, if “all lights on” is wasteful, and “all lights off” feels unsafe, the answer may lie in something more nuanced. People are calling it “intelligent darkness.”

Emerging solutions include smarter lighting, not more lighting, such as motion-activated lamps, lights that dim during low activity hours, and targeted illumination (paths, crossings, and entrances rather than entire streets). Also, better design and not brighter bulbs is another solution. This includes directional lighting that reduces glare and light spill, warmer tones that are less disruptive to wildlife than blue-rich LEDs, and strategic placement of lighting based on actual use, not habit.

Context matters too: busy urban areas are not equivalent to rural roads and pedestrian zones are not equivalent to industrial zones. Urban design, visibility, community presence, and social cohesion matter too.

Where is light truly needed? What have we lost by illuminating everything, all the time?

Maybe the real debate may not be whether streetlights should be on or off, but how much light does a human, and a planet, actually need?

A tension is unfolding across France’s cinematic landscape. It is a structural conflict between large multiplex chains and smaller, often municipally supported cinemas. At stake is the cultural diversity of film itself.

The scale of the French cinema sector highlights what is at stake:

46.7 million cinema visits were recorded between January and March 2026.

France has 2,053 cinema establishments with 6,355 screens.

Of these, 251 are multiplexes and 1,113 are single-screen venues.

France has 1,290 classified “art house” cinemas.

Employment in the sector in 2026 is 16,123 workers, a 2.6% decline compared to 2023.

These figures reveal both the resilience and fragility of the sector. While attendance remains significant, structural pressures are mounting.

Recent developments suggest that major multiplex networks are pushing to limit the access of smaller cinemas to national movie releases. This is not an abstract concern. According to local cinema operators, some municipal and independent venues are now being excluded from initial release times, sometimes waiting weeks before they can screen films that open nationwide elsewhere.

For many small cinemas, the issue is simple: access to films is becoming increasingly restricted. Directors of independent venues report that since March 2026, they have been effectively shut out of certain national releases. In some cases, films only become available to them three weeks after their premiere, by which time much of the audience demand has already been captured by larger chains.

This marks what some industry figures describe as a regression in film access, something not seen in previous decades. The concern is not just economic; it is cultural. When smaller cinemas cannot screen new films as soon as possible after release, their role in sustaining diverse and local film culture weakens.

At the heart of the conflict is pricing and the competitive imbalance it creates. Multiplexes often charge around €7.50 to €8 per ticket, while municipal cinemas may offer significantly lower prices, sometimes as little as €6, or €3.50 for children, thanks to public subsidies.

From the perspective of large chains, this creates an uneven playing field. From the perspective of local authorities, however, these lower prices are essential to ensuring broad public access to cinema, particularly in smaller towns and suburban areas.

Municipalities argue that their cinemas are not just commercial enterprises but cultural institutions. They often provide educational programming, curated film selections, and community events that multiplexes do not.

Local officials and cinema operators have gone further, accusing large distributors and chains of exerting pressure on distributors to limit film access for smaller venues. Some describe this as a form of “economic censorship” where the ability to show films becomes contingent on commercial alignment rather than cultural value.

An example is a drop in the number of national releases shown at certain independent cinemas, from 42 in 2024 to 24 in 2025. While multiple factors may be at play, local cinema staff point to distribution practices as a key driver.

Distributors occupy a powerful position in this ecosystem. They determine how films are released, where they are shown, and in what sequence. Increasingly, negotiations between multiplexes and distributors are happening late in the process, sometimes reshaping release strategies at the last minute.

This leaves smaller cinemas at a disadvantage. Without the same bargaining power or scale, they are often excluded from early access, even when they serve loyal and engaged audiences.

Interestingly, audiences are shifting their preference. After the pandemic-induced decline in cinema attendance, multiplexes have seen a partial rebound helped by major international movie releases such as Marsupilami, Avatar, and Super Mario. However, this recovery is uneven.

Studies show that attendance in multiplexes is stabilizing, but not necessarily growing. Meanwhile, smaller cinemas, once popular with locals, are now stagnating or declining, particularly when they cannot offer new movie releases.

At the same time, streaming continues to reshape viewing habits. Many audiences now prefer watching films at home, further intensifying competition for movie venues of all sizes.

Ultimately, this battle is not just about business models. It’s about the kind of cinema culture France wants to preserve.

Multiplexes offer scale, convenience, and access to blockbuster films. Smaller cinema venuesprovide something different: intimacy, curation, and a connection to local communities. They are often the only venues screening independent films, documentaries, and international works that fall outside mainstream distribution.

If these smaller venues lose access to new releases, their viability, and the diversity of the cinematic ecosystem, may be at risk.

Recognizing the growing tension, France’s National Cinema Centre has established a mediation committee to address disputes between distributors and exhibitors. Whether this will lead to meaningful change remains to be seen. For now, the battle continues, shaping what audiences can watch, where they can watch it, and how quickly they can access it.

Art Deco is back in vogue in interior design in a form that is both nostalgic and entirely modern.

Art Deco emerged in the years leading up to the 1920s, reaching its full expression after the First World War when Europe, and particularly France, reimagined modern life in buildings and homes. The movement takes its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925, where architects and designers presented bold new visual designs. It was a style that celebrated craftsmanship, modern materials, and optimism about the future, combining luxury with precision.

Unlike the flowing natural forms of Art Nouveau that came before it, Art Deco embraced geometry, symmetry, structure, subtlety, and simplicity. It drew inspiration from a fascinating mix of sources: ancient Egyptian motifs (especially after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb), African art, Cubism, and the sleek lines of new technologies, such as cars, trains, and ocean liners. It was decorative and ornamental, yet disciplined.

Paris became the epicenter of Art Deco, with architects and designers weaving these ideas into façades, interiors, and everyday objects. Buildings across the city began to reflect the motifs in subtle geometric ironwork and stylized floral patterns that still define many Parisian streets today.

In today’s resurgence, Art Deco does not have the same grandiosity of the 1920s, such as mirrored walls, bold lacquer, and dramatic symmetry. Instead, it has the flourishes and smallgestures of the period: brass edges, fan-shaped motifs, and lamp arcs. The main resurgence depicts the subtle, simple, geometric styles, such as clean lines and repeating motifs. There is a renewed appreciation for detail and craftsmanship, rather than replicating the opulent styles. Out is replication and in is inspiration.

Paris, of course, is at the heart of this resurgence and influence. The exterior architecture of the 1920s seems to be making its way indoors to echo the mood of Art Deco. And the mood is a bit of order, a touch of glamour, and a respect for craftsmanship.

Art Deco is adaptable, fitting into both a minimalist apartment and into more traditional homes. Perhaps this is why it resonates now. In a world that often feels excessive and overwhelming, itbalances structure and gracefulness. Art Deco provides discipline and purpose but with a sense of timeless beauty.

It is, quite simply, an immersion into joy. The Paris exhibition of Renoir et l’amour: la modernité heureuse (1865–1885) – Renoir and Love: happy modernity – brings love and joy into people’s lives. Opened on 17 March 2026, it continues at the Musée d’Orsay until 19 July.

French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) has often been called “the painter of happiness” and here, at this exhibition, that title feels accurate and inevitable. His canvases gather you in, as though you were just another guest at the table, another figure beneath a striped awning, another passerby caught in a luminous afternoon, smiling and laughing with your wonderful companions. Renoir paints the elusive feelings of contentment in motion and laughter mid-conversation.

What struck me most was how Renoir paints the feeling of seeing or remembering your first love with such tenderness and gaiety, in an unguarded moment. It’s everywhere: young women lean into the conversation, listening intently; men hover attentive and curious; and faces glow with the possibility of joy, and love too.

These are not posed lovers. They are people discovering love. And Paris, in these years, is the backdrop, the accomplice in bringing people together.

The exhibition makes something beautifully clear: Renoir did not simply paint people; he painted people in Paris in pure moments of feeling something intense. His figures are never static, and their flesh shimmers with emotion. Oh, my goodness, I felt voyeuristic – momentarily – but then, I felt invited into their conversation, into their world of love and joy.

The recognizable paintings are there: Luncheon of the Boating Party, Boating on the Seine, Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, Dance at Bougival, Dance in the Country, Dance in the City, The Swing, Two Sisters, Frederic Bazille at his Easel, Woman with a Parasol in a Garden, The Grand Boulevards, The Umbrellas, and more.

What makes Renoir’s scenes so unforgettable is how inseparable the people are from their surroundings: tables cluttered with glasses and fruit, striped awnings filtering sunlight into fragments, and leaves dissolving into brushstrokes. The cafés, the gardens, the riverbanks. The half-public, half-private spaces where strangers become companions and afternoons stretch long into the hours and into the memory. I began to see that love, in Renoir, is rarely isolated. It happens among others, with others, even if someone’s eyes are on someone special.

Everyone is undeniably beautiful. Not because they are idealized or posed or perfect, but because they are authentic and seen with affection, seen with love and joy: a woman adjusting her hat, a child absorbing the adult world, a man leaning forward as though caught between listening and speaking, another lighting a cigarette after wine and tea.

This is not just a visual experience of love and joy. There is always a background murmur, a conversation, a movement, life continuing as it does. Love is not separate from the world; it is woven into it. I began looking not only at the paintings but at the people looking at the paintings, hearing their conversations, leaning in to grasp their feelings, to hang onto a memory.

And the colours! Renoir’s palette is perhaps the most radical element of all. They are notharsh. Skin glows and even shadows seem to glow. Blues soften, reds flicker, orange appeals, green is abundant, and all the while, the light circulates around and among and between.

Leaving the exhibition, what lingers is not a single painting, but a sensation that love and joy exist most powerfully in the ordinary, when it is seen and heard.

Renoir delights in painting people, in painting their joy in being with and among people, and in painting every nuance of their everyday actions. And I too felt his joy and recognized it for exactly the love that it is.

‘Riven’ is a rare word. It’s not a word we hear in everyday conversation. You’re unlikely to hear someone say, “My family is riven,” or “My workplace feels riven.” Yet, when it appears in an article, it carries weight or seriousness. What does it mean?

TIME magazine published the article Bangladesh’s Prodigal Son on 9 February 2026 with the sentence: “Rahman insists he’s the right person to heal his riven nation.” It discusses the return of Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh after years of exile to run in the 12 February elections. What does riven mean?

Riven is the past participle of the verb to rive, which means to split, tear apart, or violently divide. When something is described as riven, it suggests not just division, but a deep rupture, something pulled apart with force, often leaving scars.

Where does the word come from? The word traces back to Old English rifan, meaning to tear apart. It shares roots with words across Germanic languages, all pointing toward acts of splitting or breaking. It suggests something physical, like wood being split along the grain or fabric torn under strain.

Unlike more common words such as divided or fractured, riven is about an act of violence, its root, and its aftermath. It doesn’t just describe a state, it hints at the event that caused it and what it leads to.

Why does this article use the word riven? Choosing riven instead of divided compresses its meaning: it suggests deep, possibly longstanding, conflict. It evokes emotional and structural damage, and it adds a slightly literary tone, an elevated word, rare but not obscure.

In this article, applied to Bangladesh and Tarique Rahman, the word frames the nation as torn in a way that requires healing, and not merely a political rift.

What does the article say? Does the sentence match the rest of the article? More specifically, does the content support this level of intensity? The word implies that the article should describe significant political or social divisions, convey tension, conflict, or instability, or position Rahman as a figure claiming to repair these divisions.

The article indeed details entrenched political rivalries, polarization, and institutional strain in Bangladesh, so the word riven is not only appropriate, it is precise. It prepares readers for a narrative of fracture and attempted reconciliation.

But words like riven are not neutral. They shape perception before we even begin to read the rest of the article. Sometimes, a single uncommon word can carry the emotional thesis of an entire article.

I could write a book from one photograph – this photograph – not because of who is in it, but because it shows a moment and creates a world at the same time: a complete emotional landscape contained within a single frame.

Let me try to explain why.

The sky is not background. The heavy, textured, almost sculptural clouds press downward, like an architectural ceiling, and yet, there is golden light breaking through. This tension between darkness and light creates the emotional tone of the entire photograph. It feels like a threshold moment, not quite darkness and not quite lightness, not quite despair, and not quite hope.

The dune is movement without motion. The sand is alive with wind-drawn lines that are delicate, almost calligraphic. These are not random patterns but directional forces. They guide the eye inward, pulling me toward the subject, the person, then outward again toward the horizon. The indentations, the footprints, the tyre treads, and impressions, show signs that this place has been crossed, traversed, and someone has arrived. And yet, the vastness remains untouched.

The figure is still. This is not a person in pose, but a person in a state of being. The body is positioned with extraordinary precision, whether intentional or instinctive: knees drawn but not closed, arms extended but not tense, a hand splayed into the sand is grounding but not holding, and the slight forward angle of the torso is alert, but not defensive. The person is neither resting nor moving.

The details that shouldn’t matter, but do: the ring, the shoes without socks, the soft collapse of fabric around the elbows and knees, the structured head scarf, hair loose: always, something loose. These details create contradiction: prepared yet vulnerable, grounded yet transient, present yet elsewhere.

The gaze is an unanswered question. Her eyes are not fully seen but their direction is noticed. She is not looking at the camera. She is not looking at the horizon. She is looking at something I cannot access, and that is the masterstroke. I must enter the image to imagine what she is looking at, thinking about, leaving behind, going to next, in solitude, in exile, with the people in the background, with the photographer.

This is where the photograph becomes cinematic. It not only looks like a film still, but it also suggests a story before and after the frame. This is where the photograph becomes fundamental storytelling, where everything is in relationship to something else. The sky presses down; the sand stretches outward. The figure anchors the foreground; the horizon frees the distance. The textures of the clouds, the fabric, the sand, collaborate with one another; nothing competes. There is space: space for nothingness but nature, space for emptiness but life, and space for interpretation but meaning.

What can I learn about storytelling from this photograph?

Mystery is more powerful than clarity. Not everything needs to be explained. This image withholds information, and in doing so, it deepens the mystery.

Composition is emotional, not just visual. Lines, textures, and positioning are not aesthetic alone, because they direct what I feel.

Stillness can carry more intensity than action. There is no movement yet the photograph is alive with tension and possibility.

Details are narrative anchors. A ring, a shoe, and a fold in the fabric are not incidental. They are entry points into a story.

A single image can hold an entire book. This may be the most important lesson of all, because when I look at this photograph, I do not see a moment.

I see chapters.

I see a woman who has travelled, geographically, emotionally, and perhaps spiritually. I see a pause that is not an ending, but a reckoning. I see a landscape that mirrors an internal state. And I realize that storytelling is not about adding more. It is about seeing more.

This photograph expands me. It sharpens my perception, deepens my curiosity, and reinforces the point that a story is everywhere, waiting to be noticed.

This photograph does that. It does not ask for attention. It earns it. And then, it refuses to let me go. It holds me in so much that I have become obsessed with its potential.

On Easter morning in Paris, Élise opened the window and the cold air slipped in. A church bell rang nearby.

In the Parisian apartment on a narrow street, Élise placed a single egg on her windowsill. She did this ritual every Easter.

It was not chocolate.

It was a real egg, painted in soft blue – eggshell blue – with a thin gold line circling its middle. Once perfect, but that was yesterday. Today it is imperfect and slightly faded.

She did this ritual every Easter.

Below, a child ran along the street and stopped short at the end of a queue. A man on a bicycle slowed, as if deciding whether to stop for bread or keep going toward the river.

Élise watched the egg on her windowsill catch the light. She lifted it, turned it three times in her hand, and placed it back on the sill, this time slightly closer to the sun.

Downstairs, the boulangerie opened. Élise wrapped a shawl around her shoulders, descended the steps of her apartment, and joined the bakery queue with baguette in mind.

Egg on toasted baguette. And just like that, Easter began again.

A Parisian Egg Recipe:

Œufs Cocotte à la Parisienne (Parisian-Style Baked Eggs)

Ingredients (serves 2)

4 Fresh eggs

4 Tablespoons crème fraîche

A small handful of fresh spinach (or mushrooms, lightly sautéed)

30g grated Gruyère or Comté cheese

Butter (for the ramekins)

Salt, pepper

Fresh chives or herbs

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

2. Line two small ramekins (ceramic pots) generously with butter.

3. Add a spoon of crème fraîche (or sour cream) at the base.

4. Layer in spinach or mushrooms.

5. Crack 2 eggs into each ramekin.

6. Add another spoon of crème fraîche on top.

7. Sprinkle cheese, salt, and pepper.

8. Place ramekins in a bain-marie (a baking dish with hot water halfway up the sides).

9. Bake for 10–12 minutes until whites are set but yolks remain soft.

10. Sprinkle fresh herbs on top to garnish.

Serve with toasted baguette, a simple green salad, and tea or coffee.

In a recent piece from The New York Times International Edition, the designer Harry Nuriev imagined something unsettling: a world without crystal as he talks about a new exhibition in Paris. Around the same time, Financial Times HTSI noted the unexpected return of chandeliers reappearing in contemporary interiors with magnificent confidence.

For me, crystal has never been theoretical, nor decorative, in the purely aesthetic sense. It has always been personal and more than a trend.

Crystal is making a comeback. In Paris, crystal has found new meaning. Designers are talking more about presence: a single chandelier rather than a roomful of glitter. Nuriev’s collaboration with Baccarat is about stripping away assumptions of the Palace of Versailles and its hall of crystal chandeliers and asking what crystal can mean for the everyday home in modern times.

Crystal is also becoming rare. True crystal, especially hand-cut, requires time, skill, and patience to create, and many historic ateliers have closed or reduced production due to the rise of modern manufacturing. Artisanship is no longer passed down as it once was.

Crystal did not disappear; it became unfashionable. Minimalistic decor stripped interiors of ornament: the crystal chandelier is too ornate, too reminiscent of another era, they say.

But now, crystal returns, not as excess, classy glassy, or luxury. Its elegance is restrained. Yet it continues to do what it always has done. Crystal responds to light and movement. It does something few materials can: it holds light and fragments it into rainbows. A small rainbow prism on a windowsill can transform an ordinary morning into something briefly extraordinary.

My relationship with crystal began long before I understood any of this. It began with my mother, Christel. She is gone now, but crystal remains one of the ways I continue to encounter her as a living presence in light. I do not imagine a world without them because I have built a small world of crystals around me.

They sit on windowsills, on tables, clustered in bowls or as a singular piece. When the sun enters the apartment, the crystals cast fragments of rainbow hues across walls, books, and my computer. These moments are fleeting but beautiful.

I keep crystals around me because they do something words cannot fully do. They make memories visible. They allow me to experience my mother not only in recollection, but in shifting moments of light and colour. There is comfort in that.

To imagine a world without crystal is, perhaps, to imagine a world without reflection. For designers, crystal may be returning as material. For me, it never left. It is Paris, the City of Light. It is my mother, still finding ways to enter the room.

There are some poems that feel as though they have been waiting for me for a long time.

I found one in the 2007 Haiku poetry collection A Voyage of My Mind … by Istanbul-born Fureya Ersoy, now living in London. It is a nameless haiku poem, so delicate it almost dissolved as I read it:

“raindrops on roses

flamboyant pearls of nature—

till the sun comes out”

There is something simply miraculous about haiku, like the way it distills a moment so precisely that time seems to hesitate. Three unrhymed lines, 17 syllables, and yet it is an entire world: the cool weight of raindrops, the soft yielding of petals, the shimmer of something that will not last.

I was no longer reading. I was remembering. The phrase “raindrops on roses” carries its own memory, doesn’t it? It’s a gentle thread back to the 1965 movie The Sound of Music, and to Julie Andrews singing with that crystalline clarity that defined so much of my childhood. The song, My Favorite Things, was a catalogue of comfort, a list of a few of the singer’s pet likes, such as raindrops on roses and schnitzel with noodles.

But here, in Ersoy’s haiku, the raindrops are no longer simply comforting. They are “flamboyant pearls of nature” and extravagant, almost excessive in their beauty. There is something sensual in that phrase, something tactile. You can feel the roundness of the droplets, see the way they cling to the petal, trembling to the rose before surrendering to gravity or light.

And then, the line “till the sun comes out.”

Everything is temporary. That is the truth at the heart of the poem. The pearls will vanish. The roses will dry. The moment dissolves even as we witness it.

Perhaps that is why it lingers with me.

Because I have always been drawn to the fleeting, the half-seen, the spaces between presence and absence, this haiku feels like standing at a window just after rain, when the world is both sharpened and softened, when light begins to return but hasn’t yet claimed everything. Again, it is a memory of being in Aunt Jeanne’s cottage garden in Normandy, France, after a brief shower of rain on her roses.

It is a poem that asks nothing of you except to notice. But noticing the ordinary, it becomes luminous. The familiar becomes strange again. Even a childhood melody returns, altered, and less about comfort now, and more about impermanence. A poem about how beauty intensifies precisely because it cannot stay.

I think that is why this poem feels like it belongs to me, in some unspoken way. It holds the exact tension I recognize in my own life; the desire to preserve moments, and the understanding that they are most alive because they slip through our fingers.

In a classroom in England, something extraordinary happened. Ducklings hatched.

There is a reason eggs and ducklings feel inseparable from spring. This is the season of beginning again. As daylight lengthens in the Northern Hemisphere, birds respond almost immediately. Their internal rhythms signal that it is time to nest, to lay eggs, to begin the fragile process of bringing new life into the world. Eggs are, perhaps, the most perfect symbol of this.

What is remarkable about ducklings, and all hatchlings, is how quickly they cross the threshold from stillness to movement. Inside the egg, it waits. Suddenly, there is tapping, a crack, and a ball of yellow feathers emerge.

There are small, fascinating details that make this moment even more extraordinary. Ducklings can communicate from inside the egg before they hatch, making soft sounds to synchronize with one another. They are born with the instinct to follow movement, which is why they imprint so quickly on the first figure they see. And within hours, they can walk, swim, and explore with surprising independence for something so newly arrived.

There is a phrase for this season: spring chicken. In this situation: spring duckling. Originally, spring chicken meant exactly what it sounds like: a young bird hatched in spring, new to the world and full of life. As we age, the phrase becomes a reversal: I’m no spring chicken. And yet, standing in a classroom with a newly hatched duckling resting in small hands, the phrase feels closer to its original meaning again: not about age, but about being at the very beginning of something new, however briefly.

Children know instinctively how to hold a newly hatched bird: carefully, curiously, and with a kind of reverence, as if they know they are holding a new beginning in their hands.

Sometimes, we can hold spring in two hands.

Spring does not arrive in Paris all at once. Spring begins almost invisibly. It does not make a grand entrance, like summer with its long evenings and crowded terraces. It does not announce itself like autumn, with its turning leaves and golden light.

A few weeks ago, there were days when the sun felt warm. People sat outside cafés along the Boulevard Saint-Germain, coats open. And then, the weather turned. Last weekend brought cold weather back again. Even hail, sudden and unexpected. Is spring here? Not yet?

Despite this cold snap, spring has already begun. The first signs were almost unnoticed. Daffodils appeared almost overnight in the Luxembourg Gardens. Crocuses pushed through cold soil. Those earliest blossoms, tentative and pale, as if unsure of their timing, were there.

Even the light changed before the temperature did. The light lingered longer in the evenings.Spring is on its way. Spring is near. Spring is here – but in the mist of the cold snap. Spring is inevitable.

In the Northern Hemisphere, spring is more than a season. It is a kind of collective exhale.After months of grey skies and inward living, people begin to re-emerge, slowly at first, then all at once. There is something deeply human about this anticipation of spring weather. Peoplelook forward to spring not only for warmth, but to sit outside again, to smell the flowers, and to look forward to new beginnings.

In the coming weeks, trees along the river Seine will bloom. The window boxes will fill with tulips, magnificent magnolias will bring pink hues to courtyards, and chestnut trees will bring the roasted chestnut vendors onto the streets. Cafés will expand outward. Chairs will turn to face the street. Coats will become lighter in material and colour, with more silk scarves and less wool wraps.

Markets will change too. Winter vegetables will give way to the first asparagus, early strawberries, and lighter food. There will be spring exhibitions, open-air events, and the return of music along the riverbanks.

What I love most about spring in Paris is that it does not arrive with certainty. It comes in fragments: a warm afternoon, a crisp morning, a sudden storm of hail, and a blossom that appears anyway. Change does not need to be immediate to be real. Spring approaches slowly, until one day we realise that it has been here all along.

Spring, Almost

a softness in the light,

a longer pause

before evening.

The flowers arrive first,

inevitably,

as if they have kept a promise

I had forgotten.

Cold returns, briefly,

a hand on the shoulder, saying

“wait, not yet.”

And still, in the mist,

something happens.

I walk differently.

I look up more,

to see the blue sky.

I wait.

Spring is not a moment in time.

It is a slow lean

toward warmth,

toward colour,

toward something fresh and new.

Spring does not make a grand entrance in Paris.

It begins slowly, then stalls,

until one morning, without announcement,

I realise it has already begun.

There are streets in the tourist heart of Paris with a different tempo, an ethereal aura, where the past feels strangely present. One of those streets is Rue du Jardinet, which literally means Little Garden Street, and that is not poetic exaggeration.

Rue du Jardinet sits just steps from some of the most famous intellectual landmarks of the Left Bank: the cafés and publishing houses that made Saint-Germain-des-Prés synonymous with philosophy, literature, and rebellion. In cafés, writers and thinkers once frequented, like Jean‑Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and later generations of artists and musicians. Tourists come looking for that intellectual Paris.

What we walk today was once the medieval Paris of gardens. In the Middle Ages, this area sat just beyond the dense core of medieval Paris, near the great Abbey of Saint‑Germain‑des‑Prés. Around the abbey were orchards, small gardens, and cultivated plots that monks or residents owned.

Rue du Jardinet grew along the edges of those cultivated plots of land. It is a practical path once connecting gardens, houses, and artisan workshops. Over centuries, the gardens disappeared and buildings rose, but the lane never widened and the medieval footprint remains.

That is why the lane still feels so intimate.

One of the delights of Rue du Jardinet is the texture of its architecture. Buildings here date largely from the 17^th and 18^th centuries, though their foundations are often older. The warm yellow-ochre facades, the pale stone framing the windows, and the occasional heavy wooden beams feel almost theatrical, like a stage set that has aged over several hundred years.

Within this short lane, this little garden street, there is a carved stone animal above a doorway, old iron window grilles, and walls where plaster has worn away, revealing earlier layers of the building beneath. These are not the grand Haussmann facades that dominate much of Paris. Those came later in the 19^th century.

For writers, streets like Rue du Jardinet have a special pull. Perhaps it is the narrowness. Perhaps it is the uneven cobblestones. Perhaps it is the way the buildings seem to lean toward one another. Places like this encourage imagination. You begin to wonder: who walked here four hundred years ago? What conversations took place behind those shuttered windows? Which stories started in these houses and drifted out into the world?

Rue du Jardinet feels like a little corridor of ideas: a place where a story might begin.

What I love most about Rue du Jardinet is its modesty. It simply continues to exist while Paris reinvents itself again and again. You can step off a busy boulevard, turn a corner, and suddenly find yourself walking through a fragment of the city that is centuries old. In a place like this, storytelling does not feel like an act of invention. It feels like a building’s old breath.

In the narrow patience of this street

time has chosen not to hurry.

Stone remembers what we forget.

The walls hold an old breath

of centuries

as if history were simply

a long conversation

spoken softly between buildings.

A beam darkened by rain and winter

leans above a doorway

where hands once knocked

four hundred years ago

with news, with bread,

with love,

with worry about tomorrow.

Those footsteps have gone.

Yet the cobblestones

still echo.

How strange and generous

that the past has not entirely left us.

It lingers

in yellow-ochre plaster,

in the iron lace of window grilles,

in a street so narrow

that the sky must lean down

to fill it with sunshine.

I walk here now,

with tourists, wanderers,

storytellers pretending to be ordinary pedestrians,

and feel a sudden gratitude

I cannot quite explain.

Because something ancient

has survived centuries of riot and rebellion.

Because somewhere in the city

a street has refused

to become modern too quickly.

Because memory

still has an address.

And because, for a moment,

standing in this little garden street,

I remember

that the present

is simply the past

that has continued

to breathe its old breath.
